I still hate them I tried to give the Yankees the love they deserve, but ...
I have had a running dialogue with my friend, Costanzo the Lawyer, for over 30 years about the merits of the New York Yankees. Costanzo the Lawyer loves the New York Yankees. I hate the New York Yankees. In this fall of trouble and pestilence, the towers at the World Trade Center and all of that, I was prepared to look at the perennial champions of the baseball world in a different light. I would not mention their bloated payroll and their obnoxious owner, would not even bring the babblings of comedian/fan Billy Crystal into the mix. Too much had happened. I even liked the way these millionaires from the Bronx came back from that 0-2 deficit against the Oakland A's to open the playoffs. It was OK, inspiring. Then Costanzo the Lawyer called the other day. He had his World Series message. "You know what this is like?" he said. "It's like we've been at sea in a terrible storm. The ship has been bounced around, turned upside down, lashed and battered. All of a sudden, a hole has opened in the clouds. Through the hole, you can see a single star. Maybe like the North Star, shining bright. Same place as always. You realize that all is right with the world. There is one constant. Same as it always has been. The New York Yankees in the World Series."
The North Star? Shining bright through a hole in the clouds? OK, back to normal. I still hate the New York Yankees. Leigh Montville's commentaries appear regularly on CNN/Sports Illustrated. The opinions expressed here are solely those of the writer.
