A sports bonanza The World Series, NBA, NFL, NHL and much more
I would like to submit the idea that the next week or 10 days or so will contain more sports than ever before in American history. I'm not sure what this means -- if, indeed, it means anything. I'm just saying this is the situation. With the World Series moved back due to the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, baseball almost surely will slide into November for the first time. The NBA will open up on Tuesday and the NHL and the NFL already are motoring at high throttle and the Breeders' Cup is Saturday, not to mention your usual slate of college football, headed by Oklahoma-Nebraska, No. 1 vs. No. 2 in the BCS rankings, and then there's the Tour Championship next week in Houston in golf and ... wow. Are the marriage counselors of the land ready for this? Are there batteries strong enough to withstand the increased abuse of television clickers? Football, baseball, basketball, hockey. Wait a minute, what about NASCAR? Is the human mind able to handle this complexity? Or will Allen Iverson be seen swinging at a Randy Johnson fastball, sending it deep to Jaromir Jagr, who then will be creamed by Warren Sapp? Or maybe Jeff Gordon's Chevrolet? Or the field in the Distaff Stakes or maybe a Tiger Woods five-iron? Again, I don't know what this means -- though I'm sure the sound of a cash register in the background would be appropriate -- this simply is what is. If sports is supposed to be a reflection of our daily lives, well, sports these days is going to offer confusion, disorientation, a strong sense that too much is happening way too fast. I suppose the analogy works quite well.
