Hail to the victors Bledsoe may follow same fate as HensonUpdated: Thursday November 15, 2001 7:34 PM
I did a story for Sports Illustrated a few years ago on a high school phenom from Brighton, Mich., named Drew Henson. He was hitting home runs into people's backyards, winning just about everything there was to win on a football field and, if I remember right, was just about an All-Stater in basketball, too. He was headed off to the University of Michigan to play quarterback and had signed with the New York Yankees to play minor league baseball and the emphasis of the story was that hey, here's a kid who can't miss. You read it here first. With that as background, I started to follow the fortunes of the Michigan football Wolverines a little more closely. I figured he'd be moving into the starting lineup in his freshman year and making me a genius. There only was this Tom Brady character in front of him. For three years, I watched this Brady character maintain the starting position in this quarterback chase. The can't-miss phenom Henson played here and there -- started eight games in the three years -- but in the end, it was Brady who won the race. Henson wound up skipping his senior year to concentrate on baseball and Brady wound up as a late draft pick by the New England Patriots. So now this Brady character is knocking 'em dead off the bench in New England and Drew Bledsoe, the former Pats starter, is healthy again and ready to retake the job and... does Drew Bledsoe know all about Drew Henson? Haven't we seen all this once already? Leigh Montville's commentaries appear regularly on CNN/Sports Illustrated. The opinions expressed here are solely those of the writer.
