Boring? The Senior tour? The geezers got just what they needed at
the Toshiba Senior Classic, in which, between yuks, a TV wag in
granny glasses and a Don Ho shirt made a do-or-die eagle putt,
missed a kick-in to win (must've been the bikini wax), then beat
the big hitter who had wasted his youth on wine, women and song.
The Seniors have a pulse, thanks to Gary McCord versus John
Jacobs -- the playoff with a payoff.
PGA
The Sunday stumbles of Eric Booker (77), Bradley Hughes (80)
and Tommy Tolles (77) at the Honda Classic, which Vijay Singh
won by two shots , guaranteed that the Tour would not have a
first-time winner in the first 10 weeks of the season. The last
time that happened was 1994....
Players are calling this week's
Bay Hill Invitational the IMG Open. Of the 18 players awarded
exemptions to the event, which is run by IMG, 11 are represented
by the management company.
LPGA
Juli Inkster, who won the Welch's/Circle K by a stroke over
Dottie Pepper, replaced her three-iron with a seven-wood before
the tournament and used the new club to eagle the 13th hole on
Sunday....
Karrie Webb 's tie for eighth, four shots behind
Inkster, was her worst result this season.

The McCord-Jacobs playoff was the longest on the tour
since David Graham beat Dave Stockton on the 10th extra hole (the
Senior record) at the '98 Royal Caribbean Classic.
ALSO
Jumbo Ozaki, 52, got his 110th career victory, in the Token
Cup, the Japanese tour's season-opener and the first event
played under the auspices of the new Japan Golf Tour
Organization, which split from the JPGA, just as the PGA Tour
split from the PGA of America in 1968....
Miguel Angel Jimenez ,
winner of the Turespana Masters at Malaga, became the first
player to successfully defend his title on the European tour
since Per-Ulrik Johansson at the '97 Smurfit European Open....
Texas freshman David Gossett , the top-ranked collegian, won for
the third time this season, at the Golf Digest Invitational in
Las Vegas.
