A Golfer's Life My Story

"I'm in my own little world," Karrie Webb said on Sunday after winning the Standard Register Ping for her third victory in six starts in '99. At this rate she'll better Mickey Wright's LPGA record of 13 wins in a calendar year. With 17 rounds in the 60s, Webb could also pass the one-year mark of 46, held by Kelly Robbins. Annika Sorenstam's alltime low scoring average of 69.99 is doomed, too, if Webb maintains her 68.43 pace. Own world? No argument here.

PGA
Vijay Singh looking for his second straight win, finished fifth at Bay Hill. Jim Gund
Tim Herron, who birdied the second hole of a playoff with Tom Lehman to win the Bay Hill Invitational
, is the third active Minnesota-born player to win more than once on the Tour. The others are Lehman and Lee Janzen ...

In his first start with new caddie Steve Williams, Tiger Woods came in 56th, his worst showing since the '97 Canadian Open ...

Lehman's finish was his best since last year's Players Championship, in which he was also second.

LPGA
Webb, a four-stroke winner over Lorie Kane , has had the hottest start to a season since 1980, when JoAnne Carner got her third victory on March 9 ...

Sorenstam made her first hole in one during a tour event in the third round, sinking a 140-yard eight-iron on the 2nd hole ...

Kane , who has never won, set the record for subpar rounds in a season last year with 69, beating the previous high of 64 held by Webb ...

Webb has reached $3 million in career earnings faster (three years, two months and seven days) than any other player by more than two years and has jumped five spots on the career money list, to 17th, so far this year ...

Pat Bradley was named U.S. captain for the 2000 Solheim Cup, beating out Patty Sheehan . "They had to choose between one of us grayheads," Sheehan said. "I was disappointed, but I'll get my chance."

SENIOR
Gil Morgan, who teamed with Hubert Green to win the Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf two weeks after he won the Senior Slam, has two unofficial victories and $458,000 in unofficial earnings in '98. In sanctioned events he has no wins and $117,640 in earnings.

ALSO
Steve Gotsche became the third first-time winner on the Nike tour this year by beating Kelly Gibson by two strokes at the Monterrey Open ...

The late Lloyd Mangrum , who was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame on Monday with Amy Alcott and Seve Ballesteros , didn't get his first win (at the 1940 Thomasville Open) until 11 years after he turned pro. He ended up with 36 Tour victories ...

Kellee Booth , a 22-year-old amateur, won the Futures tour's Pacific Bell Classic, in Riverside, Calif.
