In the Crease Posted: Tuesday June 08, 1999 04:36 PM By Pierre McGuire One name to remember going into the NHL amateur draft on June 26: Kris Beech , a 6'3", 185-pound center who played for the Calgary Hitmen of the Western Hockey League. Beech, who was rated seventh by the league's Central Scouting service in its final rankings in May, has seen his stock rise after a dominant performance in the Memorial Cup last month. His on-ice vision, his ability to control the puck in traffic and his desire to have the puck in key moments of a game are what make Beech so appealing.... With Dominik Hasek in net, the Sabres will be the first Eastern Conference team in four years to have a decided advantage in goal over its Western foe during the Stanley Cup finals. ( Ed Belfour is the Stars' goalie.) The last time that happened, the Devils, behind Martin Brodeur , upset the Wings, with Mike Vernon , in 1995. Since then the West has swept every final series.... Later this month NHL coaches and their assistants will be meeting in Boston to discuss how to form a coaches union. As many as 90 coaches are expected to attend.... Over the last three years the Capitals have lost more than 1,300 man-games to injury. General manager George McPhee has hired Dr. John Arnett, the head of the University of Manitoba's clinical health psychology department, to study the Caps' training, treatment and rehabilitation practices. Don't be surprised to see changes in Washington's medical and training personnel before next season.... Patrick Roy 's Avalanche teammates had to be scratching their heads in the third period of their 4-1 loss to the Stars in Game 7 of the West finals. Roy, who was trying to ignite his club, made several poor plays behind the net, including one that resulted in Dallas's fourth goal.
