Inside Motor Sports - Mark Bechtel

Sports Illustrated's Mark Bechtel takes a weekly look at who's hot and who's not in the world of motor sports. Click here to send him a question.

Gearin' Up

Chip Ganassi: He has to be pleased with his decision to run his cars at Indy. A 1-7 finish isn't half bad; it's enough to make other CART owners kick themselves for not going and IRL teams curse him for coming.

Roger Penske: It took a while, but he got his 100th win as an owner--three years and three days after No. 99. Also, props to his driver, Gil de Ferran , for picking up his first oval win.

Matt Kenseth: What's the deal with these rookies winning? Does this mean Ed Berrier will win next week?

John Force: Tied Bob Glidden 's NHRA career victory mark with win No. 85, which is the NHRA's 714 or 4,191.

Shiftin' Down

Greg Ray. First polesitter in eight years to finish last at Indy. Having your champ go out first doesn't do wonders for a circuit trying to make a statement. It also doesn't help when three of the top seven finishers come from non-IRL loops.

The fairer sex: Kudos to Sarah Fisher , who handled the media onslaught at Indy like a pro. But some bad luck collected her and Lyn St. James in the same wreck, which rendered the race an all-boys affair at the end.

Robby Gordon: Busted his butt to get to Charlotte from Indy, only to be penalized five laps upon getting in his car, finishing 35th. Hopefully that gigantic check he'll cash from his sixth place Indy finish will make him feel better.

Darrell Waltrip: Buying your way into a race? Come on. And still finishing behind the aforementioned penalized Gordon? Oy.

Jerry Nadeau: Might have had the best car at Charlotte while it was running. He will win a race, and will surprise everyone who has never heard of him (lotsa folks) and the few who have.
