Ranting and roiling

Robinson's outburst not unusual -- or calculated

New Jersey coach Larry Robinson's post-match rant Saturday has been credited with inspiring the Devils' 4-1 victory in Game 5 Monday.

But two things should be clear: 1) Robinson's outburst was not a unique event; and 2) it was not a calculated tirade to pump up the Devils.

When he was head coach of the Los Angeles Kings, Robinson occasionally lost it with players, not to motivate them as much as to release his own frustrations. Robinson is genuine, a coach and a man with a complete lack of guile. His anger, when it flashes, is honest.

If the Devils were shocked, it may be because as an assistant Robinson had been the good cop --initially with coach Jacques Lemaire, then with Robbie Ftorek, whom he replaced with eight games left in the regular season.

Yashin arbritration hearing to begin

Alexei Yashin begins two days of arbitration hearings in New York on Wednesday in a case that could roil the NHL.

Yashin, who refused to honor the final season of a five-year deal with the Ottawa Senators, will argue that since his contract expires June 30, he should be a restricted free agent.

Ottawa contends the center owes it another season, but the Senators will likely trade Yashin even if the ruling is favorable.

Meanwhile, the Senators also are suing Yashin and his agent Mark Gandler for $7 million for the loss of his services this season.

Keeping it in the family

A Stanley Cup social note: Guy Carbonneau's 18-year-old daughter Anne-Marie is dating Carbonneau's teammate, Dallas Stars rookie left wing Brenden Morrow.

The 40-year-old Carbonneau jokes he should know better than to let his daughter near a hockey player but then, things could be worse: The 21-year-old Morrow has a high-paying job, is unlikely to have multiple body piercings and Dad can keep an eye one him.

Carbonneau is unsure of his future -- he has been rumored as front-office material in Montreal. But another ex-Canadien with Dallas, Brian Skrudland, will announce his retirement after the playoffs. Skrudland has a serious injury to his sternum.
