Patrick Roy's argument with his wife, Michele, which led to charges of misdemeanor criminal mischief being filed against the Colorado Avalanche goalie, shocked the hockey world coming on the heels of Roy setting the all-time record for wins.

But Roy's display of temper -- he allegedly ripped two doors off their hinges during the domestic dispute -- is not entirely out of character for a goalie who often has exhibited a fiery side.

With Montreal, he once fought a teammate between periods during a game in Philadelphia. In Colorado, he has tangled with a bouncer. And in a postgame tirade 23 months ago, he destroyed a TV and VCR in the coaches' room in Anaheim after being briefly replaced as coach Bob Hartley stalled in an effort to rest players for a 5-on-3 power play. Craig Billington was in nets when Colorado scored the winning goal. He earned the victory without making a save, delaying--by a game--Roy's assault on Terry Sawchuk's mark.

Young gun

Almost forgotten among the glut of marquee rookies this season -- notably Tampa Bay's Brad Richards and Minnesota's Marian Gaborik -- is Ottawa left wing Martin Havlat. He has magic hands, but more impressive for a 19-year-old, an inherent sense of defense. With right wing Daniel Alfredsson Mike Fisher, the high-flying Senators should have one of the NHL's most impressive third lines by December.

Sports Illustrated senior writer Michael Farber covers the NHL beat for the magazine and is a regular contributor to CNNSI.com.
