Psychological outcome of the weigh-in Posted: Friday January 28, 2000 06:19 PM
Rain swept into Manchester Friday as both fighters powered down their training on the eve of the fight. For nearly two weeks Mike Tyson has been happily living in a fishbowl flanked by adoring fans. But on Friday he had to get away from all the attention, and he secretly made a trip to the local airport to pick up a friend who came in for the fight. Tyson returned for the weigh-in and was the first fighter to arrive and waited patiently for Julius Francis to show up. In terms of the weigh-in, Tyson was outweighed by 21 pounds, and he told me afterwards that his state of mind, which is always an issue with him, was fine. Then the two trainers shared their views on the psychological outcome of the weigh-in, and they differed vastly. Tyson's Tommy Brooks said Francis looked like a deer caught in headlights. Francis' Mark Rowe told me he thought Tyson's trip to the airport was because Tyson was in fear of the outcome of the fight. So much for the mind games as we wait for the fight Saturday night.
