Bonds appears headed toward 4th MVP

You couldn't blame Barry Bonds for slowing down a little bit at age 36. Instead, he may be well on his to becoming the first ever four-time MVP.

He's already hit a career-high 47 home runs, he's carrying a career best .707 slugging percentage into the final two weeks and he needs just six runs to tie his career high of 129.

High Yield Bonds
How Barry Bonds compares to other MVP contenders this month
Player  Avg  HR  RBI  Slg
Barry Bonds  .408  21  .939
Mike Piazza  .163  .302
Jeff Kent  .339  16  .610
Jim Edmonds  .300  12  .580

Bonds' overall numbers are as good or better than any other serious candidate in the league, but when you look at just September, I think you have to give him the nod.

Barry told me he thinks this is the best shot he's ever had at making it to the World Series because the Giants are playing with confidence, and they're almost unbeatable at home.

Big prize for Big Hurt

Frankly, He's the MVP

SLG  .645  2nd
Total Bases  347  2nd

Speaking of MVP, my vote in the American League goes to Frank Thomas. The argument against giving the award to a DH doesn't matter to me when you consider how much pressure was on Thomas coming into the season. Everybody knew he would make or break the young White Sox's chances of making the playoffs and he's come through in every way.

Just look at the numbers. He's top 10 in batting average, and top five in most other major offensive categories. That's an MVP year whether you're picking up a glove or not.

Keep on playing

A lot has been made about the fact that the Indians have 15 games in 12 days down the stretch, but I think it may work in their favor. They've won 18 of 28 and are playing the best baseball they've played all year. What better time to keep on playing?

Heavenly hitters

If the Angels' Troy Glaus and Tim Salmon reach 100 RBI, it will give Anaheim five players with at least 100 runs driven in. That hasn't been done since the 1936 Yankees.
