Now is the time Chargers will get more out of a RB in next few yearsUpdated: Friday April 20, 2001 10:15 PM
I'm surprised by this trade, because I think Michael Vick is clearly the best football player in this draft. And next year with Drew Henson not in the draft, you are looking at the best quarterback in possibly the next two years in Vick. And I also think that the most important think that happened today was the price was cheap. This is not like the Ryan Leaf deal. They just switched one spot in San Diego to get Leaf and gave up two first-rounders and a second-rounder. This is just a third-rounder, a second-rounder next year and Tim Dwight. This might set into motion a lot of trades in the next day or so. Coming to Atlanta concerns me, because Vick is going to play a lot sooner in Atlanta than he would've in San Diego. We all know that Doug Flutie is going to be in San Diego for two years, but in Atlanta I suspect Vick is going to be on the field quite early. And that reminds me of Akili Smith, Cade McNown and Ryan Leaf. Some of these guys are just too young to be on the field. I'm really concerned about Vick in the Falcons' environment. What I was told, when I talked to the people in San Diego as this trade was going down, is the Chargers are looking for a "now" player. A "now" player to me means that San Diego will get a running back. So if the Chargers are going to get a running back and stay at No. 5 -- now remember, general manager John Butler could move down again -- but at the fifth pick, Butler has a chance at LaDainian Tomlinson if Cleveland doesn't take him at No. 3, or he has a chance for Deuce McAllister. So a "now" player for the Chargers is probably a running back.
