Williams to have 30-carry day Posted: Sunday October 31, 1999 03:15 PM
Sports Illustrated senior writer Peter King made the following comments Sunday on CNN's NFL Preview before the kickoff of Week 8: Bob Lorenz: We are back with Peter's notebook segment and Peter what changes does Mike Ditka have in store for his Saints? Peter King: Here's what he is going to do today, Bob. First thing he is going to do is take control of the offense and play calling from Danny Abramowitz, the offensive coordinator, Ditka has been very unhappy particularly down at the goal line at some of the play calls that have been made. The way it has worked is that they call the play and it goes through Ditka and now even though it is going to go through Ditka he is going to have the final say and he is going to overrule Abramowitz a lot more. The one other thing look for Ricky Williams to have his first thirty carry NFL day today against the Browns. BL: Everything has been going pretty smooth for the Rams, so why is Dick Vermiel so upset at the NFL? PK: It is very simple. Dick Vermeil feels that the earplugs that the Rams went out and got last week and were fitted for the offensive linemen to tune in only the quarterback's voice. He feels basically that these things are available at any hearing aid store, you can go out and buy these things and why are they being singled out for having a competitive advantage. The one other thing, just in general, the reason I think this ludicrous decision by the NFL to ban hearing aids, you are trying to get the offenses to play well, you are trying to get the offenses to play with precision, it would be like if a guy had a bad knee and they found a good new knee brace and they said no we are not going to use that because everybody in the league doesn't have it. Bad move by the NFL. BL: And finally, who are some of the hot coaches in the college ranks who may be headed to the pros? PK: I think two guys are at the top of most general manager's lists who are going to be looking at coaches. One is Nick Saban, the Michigan State Head Coach and the other is Tyrone Willingham of Stanford who has been on the mind of an awful lot general manager's only Stanford has had a losing record the last few years, both those guys will get serious consideration. There is one dark horse, Hal Mumme of Kentucky an offensive guy in a time when a lot of NFL teams need offensive help.
