So far draft big on talk, small on trades Posted: Friday March 31, 2000 02:43 AM
With the NFL draft just over two weeks away, it's starting to look as if the story of this draft could be all talk, no action -- no trading action, anyway. Let's look at the cream of the crop: Cleveland picks first, and as I reported last week, the Browns will take one of two Penn State defenders, Courtney Brown or LaVar Arrington. Brown has the edge. The players have separate visits scheduled to Cleveland next week. The Browns should decide on their pick within a week, then will sit on their plans for a few days, according to general manager Dwight Clark, waiting for some team to blow them away with an offer. Then comes Washington. The Redskins, picking at two and three, are solid on the loser of the Brown-Arrington derby in Cleveland. They'd love Arrington, a smallish Lawrence Taylor clone. Washington would then go with Alabama tackle Chris Samuels at No. 3, paving the way for the Bengals to happily pluck Florida State wide receiver Peter Warrick at No. 4. "If that happens," Bengals coach Bruce Coslet told me at the league meetings, "I'll send you flowers. We'd love that." Baltimore general manager Ozzie Newsome says the Ravens, at No. 5, are near locks to stay there and not trade down. Now if they pass on tendering an offer sheet for Bengals restricted free agent Corey Dillon, expect them to nail down Virginia running back Thomas Jones. Sports Illustrated senior writer Peter King covers the NFL and appears regularly on CNN/Sports Illustrated and CNN's NFL Preview.
