Forget Waldo

Where will Reggie White play is hottest camp question

A funny thing happened on the way to Reggie White becoming a Tennessee Titan. Other teams got very interested. White's agent, Jimmy Sexton, predicted Thursday that the 38-year-old retired defensive end would be signed by the end of the weekend. Where, he can't tell.

Six teams have inquired about White, including a stunning entry late Wednesday night: the Dallas Cowboys. Owner Jerry Jones phoned Sexton to tell him the Cowboys were interested in adding White to their richest position group, the defensive line. But Dallas is so tight on the salary cap that this almost certainly will go no further.

Handicapping the race for White:

1.) Carolina. The Panthers have moved into the lead because they'd probably be willing to pay the most. But it's not a gimme because they're not on the cusp of Super Bowl contention.

2.) Tennessee. The Titans have been stuck on a one-year, $750,000 deal for much of the week. If they'd throw in a $1 million signing bonus and stretch the deal over three years, White would be a Titan.

3.) Seattle. Money's not the issue here. AstroTurf is. It's hard to imagine White agreeing to play on turf, no matter how close he is to Mike Holmgren.

4.) Jacksonville. Purely a one-year option, because the Jags have massive cap problems in 2001. But with Tony Brackens holding out, White would be a solid option for the Jags.

5.) Philadelphia. Coach Andy Reid called White to recruit him, but unless the Eagles throw stupid money at White, a return trip home won't happen.

Around the league

Three other quick notes from NFL camps:

  • The Cowboys are not encouraged by the early work of cornerback Kevin Smith, who they'd hoped would stabilize the defensive backfield with Deion Sanders gone. He's been beaten regularly in the first week of camp and may lose his starting job.

  • Look for the Titans -- worried about the health of wideout Yancey Thigpen -- to seriously pursue Carl Pickens as a gamebreaking threat for Steve McNair.

  • Finally, the price of technology is rising at Cowboy camp. If a cell phone or beeper goes off in a team meeting or function, the offending player will be fined $200. Jerry Jones might get very rich in the next month.

Sports Illustrated senior writer Peter King covers the NFL beat for the magazine and appears each Sunday on CNN'S "NFL Preview."
