Honing my draft

Peter King - Inside the NFL

I usually make a mockery of the NFL draft in my mock first-round grid. It's a chance for me to show how much I really don't know about what's going to happen Saturday. This much I do know: Seattle and Washington are trying to trade up into the top 10. I can only figure both teams want Joey Harrington. Which, if true, should make Trent Dilfer really happy he signed with the Seahawks -- and should make Matt (My Stock Is Plummeting Faster Than AOL-Time Warner's) Hasselbeck even happier.

My guess is that before Saturday some team will move into the No. 5-10 range to get Harrington. I said 10 days ago it would be Cincinnati moving up from the 10-spot -- if I were the Bengals I'd deal with Dallas at No. 6 to ensure getting Harrington. But for the sake of uniformity, I won't make a deal here. I'll just pick it straight.

Peter King's NFL Mock Draft
1 Houston Texans
David Carr, QB, Fresno State
I feel good about going at least 1 for 32.
2 Carolina Panthers
Julius Peppers, DE, North Carolina
Make that 2 for 32.
3 Detroit Lions
Quentin Jammer, CB, Texas
The ghost of Joey Harrington is getting ready to haunt Mike McMahon.
4 Buffalo Bills
Mike Williams, T, Texas
Ever notice how the Longhorns consistently produce these high draft picks but never win the Big One?
5 San Diego Chargers
Donte' Stallworth, WR, Tennessee
Is that an accent mark over his "e," or an apostrophe? Why would it be an apostrophe?
6 Dallas Cowboys
Roy Williams, S, Oklahoma
Upside: Ronnie Lott. Downside: Frankly, I've seen the tape on him and I can't find one.
7 Minnesota Vikings
Ryan Sims, DT, North Carolina
He should send 10 percent of his signing bonus to John Bunting.
8 Kansas City Chiefs
Albert Haynesworth, DT, Tennessee
Chiefs take best available blob.
9 Jacksonville Jaguars
Bryant McKinnie, T, Miami
I cannot believe that a gigantic and mobile and healthy left tackle who never gave up a collegiate sack -- and who embarrassed NCAA sack leader Dwight Freeney when they met last year -- lasts this long.
10 Cincinnati Bengals
Joey Harrington, QB, Oregon
I really don't think he'll go 10.
11 Indianapolis Colts
Phillip Buchanon, CB, Miami
Wants to be the new Deion. What an incredible returner.
12 Arizona Cardinals
Wendell Bryant, DT, Wisconsin
Cards begin rebuilding process on a horrible line.
13 New Orleans Saints
Ashley Lelie, WR, Hawaii
June Jones loves him, and I trust June Jones. But how long has his hamstring been hurting? Since the Carter Administration?
14 Tennessee Titans
John Henderson, DT, Tennessee
They wanted a receiver, but will wait until Round 2.
15 New York Giants
Jeremy Shockey, TE, Miami
I'm shockeyed that he's still here.
16 Cleveland Browns
T.J. Duckett, RB, Michigan State
Bettis with a burst.
17 Atlanta Falcons
Levi Jones, T, Arizona State
I smell a trade here.
18 Washington Redskins
Patrick Ramsey, QB, Tulane
I smell a trade here, too. My problem is I don't know where or for what. I just believe Dan Snyder wants a headline pick.
19 Denver Broncos
Javon Walker, WR, Florida State
Best receiver not named Stallworth in this draft. Mike Shanahan loves the big guys with speed.
20 Seattle Seahawks
Daniel Graham, TE, Colorado
But Mike Holmgren's got itchy fingers and he's on the phone right now.
21 Oakland Raiders
Mike Rumph, CB, Miami
Big corner who'll get beat.
22 New York Jets
Lito Sheppard, CB, Florida
A bit slowish, in the 4.4's, but the Jets have to replenish the secondary.
23 Oakland Raiders
William Green, RB, Boston College
The proverbial best athlete available.
24 Baltimore Ravens
Dwight Freeney, DE, Syracuse
This man will lead the NFL in sacks one day. Write it down.
25 New Orleans Saints
Napoleon Harris, LB, Northwestern
Jim Haslett needs to rebuild a flagging defense, and this good-character guy gets it going.
26 Philadelphia Eagles
Charles Grant, DE, Georgia
They don't particularly need an end. But the Eagles usually follow their board in the draft.
27 San Francisco 49ers
Derek Ross, CB, Ohio State
A reach.
28 Green Bay Packers
Jabar Gaffney, WR, Florida
Brett Favre, rejoice. This kid will be the productive receiver you always wanted Bill Schroeder to be.
29 Chicago Bears
Jerramy Stevens, TE, Washington
If he keeps his head on straight, this could be the reincarnation of Mike Ditka.
30 Pittsburgh Steelers
Kalimba Edwards, DE, South Carolina
Bill Cowher faints when Edwards is there.
31 St. Louis Rams
DeShaun Foster, RB, UCLA
Rams take Faulk's heir.
32 New England Patriots
Andre Gurode, G, Colorado
But the Patriots could go in 10 different directions with this one.

Sports Illustrated senior writer Peter King will check in throughout the weekend with his thoughts and observations on the 2002 NFL draft.
