Five Things I Think I Think -- Part I Posted: Saturday April 20, 2002 12:03 PM
IRVING, Texas -- Five things I think I think as we get ready to open the draft: 1. I think the Patriots' deal with Buffalo for Drew Bledsoe is on life support. I don't believe it's totally dead, but I don’t think it will happen. If it doesn't, I blame Buffalo for not getting more serious than its offer Friday (a second-rounder in 2003 that could be upgraded to a first -- if Bledsoe plays at least 12 games and the Bills make the playoffs) when it has such a serious need at quarterback.
And I blame New England for not delineating exactly what it would take and thus fueling Bills GM Tom Donahoe's view that the Patriots created a moving target and were never serious about trading Bledsoe. 2. I think the 49ers want out of the first round and they want to deal their 27th overall pick for a high second- and high third-round choice. Good idea for them, and for any team, because there's not a lot of difference in the 21-40 area of this draft. 3. I think, much to Matt Millen's chagrin, the Lions are leaning very strongly toward taking Joey Harrington. 4. I think I'm getting a kick out of listening to teams talk about what a hack Bryant McKinnie is. Are you kidding me? He allowed zero sacks in his college career, playing one of the toughest schedules in the country. He decimated the best pass-rusher in college football last year, Syracuse's Dwight Freeney. What are these teams looking for? It's like what Bruce Coslet told me a few minutes ago, "He's one of the best tackles I've ever seen. He'll be the first guy taken from this draft to make the Pro Bowl." 5. I think the Raiders have it in their craw to trade up, but they won't have the ammo, I don't think. Sports Illustrated senior writer Peter King covers the NFL beat for the magazine and will check in throughout the day with his thoughts and observations on the 2002 NFL Draft.
