Five Things I Think I Think -- Part III Posted: Saturday April 20, 2002 3:02 PM
IRVING, Texas -- Five things I think I think midway through the first round: 1. I think the Cowboys are the big winners early in the draft, trading down two spots in the first round and getting an early third-round selection and a sixth-rounder next year -- all the while saving some money in the process because the eighth pick will cost them less than the sixth pick. Oh, and they got the man they wanted, Oklahoma safety Roy Williams. Dallas got better value than by just sitting there at No. 6 and picking Williams. 2. I think I can't believe Cincinnati didn't get value for its pick at No. 10. Sad. If the Bengals knew how to work the league, they'd have been able to trade down a few slots, pick up an extra choice somewhere and still get tackle Levi Jones. Good player. Everyone agrees about that. But the key is to get maximum value out of your pick -- and Cincinnati got minimal value. It figures with that franchise. 3. I think the Saints stole Donte' Stallworth. What a pick. With Stallworth, Jerome Pathon and Joe Horn, New Orleans has gone from having a weak receiver corps to possessing a top-10 wideout group. Time to celebrate, Aaron Brooks. 4. I think the Redskins are in mourning that they haven't been able to move up. Washington died when Stallworth went to the Saints. 5. I think that was one pretty big shock, Jeremy Shockey to the Giants. We knew that one back in February, didn't we? Kerry Collins needs to throw 85 balls to this guy this year. Sports Illustrated senior writer Peter King covers the NFL beat for the magazine and will check in throughout the day with his thoughts and observations on the 2002 NFL Draft.
