Five Things I Think I Think -- Part II Posted: Saturday April 20, 2002 1:19 PM
IRVING, Texas -- Five things I think I think early in the first round: 1. I think I can't quibble with the Lions' pick. I really can't. Matt Millen told me at the Scouting Combine that he needed seven starters and that he thought Mike McMahon was a good-enough quarterback to win with. But to pass up Joey Harrington could have haunted an already-haunted franchise for years, and this pick gives Detroit a good chance to have one of the best quarterbacks in football by 2004. 2. I think heads around the NFL shook in amazement when Carolina passed on Harrington. No one believes the Panthers think they can win long-term with Chris Weinke. 3. I think I still think Bryant McKinnie will be a better NFL player than Mike Williams, though the Bills got themselves a heck of a player. 4. I think the Chiefs are trying hard to move up a pick or two from where they are, at No. 8, and I think they will fail. 5. I think the reason there haven't been trades in the top five is simple: The teams got married to the players they wanted. Take the Bills. Tom Donahoe said on ESPN that he never got a call during his time on the clock at No.4 and that's because everyone in the league knew he was sold on Mike Williams and because he couldn't work out the impossible deal with the Raiders that surfaced late in the week. Same with San Diego and Quentin Jammer. Sports Illustrated senior writer Peter King covers the NFL beat for the magazine and will check in throughout the day with his thoughts and observations on the 2002 NFL Draft.
