Teams call Sixers, Hawks looking for a few bargains

Inside the NBA - Stephen A. Smith

76ers' coach Larry Brown said he isn't shopping second-year guard Larry Hughes, but it certainly seems that way. With Tracy McGrady a free agent this summer, the Toronto Raptors dangled their third-year forward to the Sixers for Hughes a little more than a week ago.

The Sixers, surprisingly, made the talks more intriguing by asking for a first-round pick with McGrady. The Raptors are presently contemplating the offer.

And despite his rough beginning in Atlanta, apparently there's someone interested in Hawks' guard Isaiah Rider after all. That team would be the New Jersey Nets. Recently, the Nets, who've offered forward Kendall Gill to a number of teams, threw his name to the Hawks for Rider.

"They called," one Hawks' source said. "They're were interested in him, but things are going well with Isaiah right now." Rider's recent 38-point performance against the LA Clippers doesn't hurt. Neither has the increased playing time he's been receiving of late.

Meanwhile, two wins in a row by the Nets after a two-point loss to the Spurs may have postponed the departure of coach Don Casey. "We're on our way back," guard Stephon Marbury said recently.

Perhaps the Nets have gotten some incentive from a new partner in the organization: Yankees owner George Steinbrenner. He was quoted as saying: "Now that the baseball season is over, I can devote my full attention to the Nets."

Privately, some members of the organization said they were expecting pink slips, half-jokingly, of course. Time will tell whether Steinbrenner's involvement is a joking matter.
