Inside the NBA - Stephen A. Smith

Few people outside of NBA circles have ever heard of T'wolves assistant Sidney Lowe. Now, both Vancouver and Atlanta are hearing all about him.

Shortly after the Vancouver Grizzlies contacted Minnesota for permission to talk with its assistant coach, Lowe was called back for a second interview earlier this week for the Atlanta Hawks coaching job.

There's no guarantee he'll get the job, however. His first interview with the Hawks came before they offered Michigan State's Tom Izzo a five-year deal.

Sacramento Kings' assistant coach Byron Scott followed Lowe into president Stan Kasten's and VP/GM Pete Babcock's offices this time around.

Heat of free agency on Miami's Hardaway

As the Heat-Knicks series wanes, the pressure is on Miami point guard Tim Hardaway, a free agent this summer, who is clearly playing for a new contract. Obviously, he's suffering because of it.

Hardaway scored a total of 10 points over a 10-quarter period before netting 10 points in a pivotal third-quarter stretch in Game 5. Still, he sat out most of the fourth quarter and appears to be hobbling more every day. "I'm trying to hang in there," he told viewers. "To go for as long as I can go."

Earning more than $6 million this year, the 33-year-old guard has been called a "defensive liability" by his coach, Pat Riley. With guard Anthony Carter playing the way he has been, Hardaway may have to scale back his dollar expectations from the Heat.

Equal opportunity in D.C.

The scarcity of African-Americans in front-office positions has been mentioned on several occasions in the past. But it's not an issue in the nations capital.

Michael Jordan, the Wizards' president of basketball operations, named Darrell Walker his director of player personnel earlier this week and added former Golden State Warriors' assistant coach Rod Higgins to his staff as assistant GM.

He still has Wes Unseld on board as the GM and, barring a snag in negotiations, will name Mike Jarvis his new coach any day now.

Stephen A. Smith covers the NBA for The Philadelphia Inquirer and is a frequent contributor to CNNSI.com.
