Picky situation Grizzlies wrestling with what to do with second pickPosted: Thursday May 25, 2000 08:56 PM
In the days before last Sunday's NBA's draft lottery, new Grizzlies President Dick Versace and GM Billy Knight were out of the country, checking out a prospect in Greece. With Vancouver again possessing the second overall pick, the question is why? While some around the league have speculated that the Grizzlies may try to get more athletic and go after LSU forward Stromile Swift, others are saying the Grizzlies may trade away the pick. In fact, the Grizzlies may elect to trade down for more picks. The likely target would be the Chicago Bulls, possessors of the fourth and seventh overall picks, who may not want to risk waiting around for Texas's 7-foot center Chris Mihm.
Wizards' problems may have kept Jarvis awayMike Jarvis will not be the Wizards coach because he and President of Basketball Operations Michael Jordan couldn't agree on contract terms. But the draft lottery may have had something to do with it, as well. The Wizards fell to the seventh spot, forcing them to hand over their pick to Jordan's former boss, Chicago Bulls' GM Jerry Krause. Shortly after that, Jarvis placed a call to Washington, telling Jordan he was taking his name out of the running. Apparently, Washington's salary-cap situation -- along with no first-round pick in next month's draft -- was too daunting a challenge for Jarvis to entertain. It also explains why Jarvis wanted a seven-year guaranteed deal.
