Dreaming of playoff

OK, all you BCS apologists, so you got lucky again. There happens to be only two undefeated division one schools left. (Marshall dosn't count). But are Florida State and Virginia Tech really the two best teams? Hey, let's make the Bowls mean somthing, let's integrate them into a useful playoff system that would determine the best team on the field.

So here it is. Eight teams. Four games on Dec. 11, two semifinal games Dec. 18, take Christmas week off, and play the national championship on New Year's Day. The Cotton, Gator, Orange, and Citrus host the four opening-round games. The big three -- Sugar, Rose, and Fiesta -- rotate the championship game.

Roy Kramer tries to get on the Selection committee but is turned down, so I choose the following teams: No.1 Florida State plays No. 8 Michigan State, No. 2 Virginia Tech gets No. 7 Wisconsin, No. 3 Nebraska takes on No. 6 Kansas State, and No. 4 Alabama faces No. 5 Tennessee.

First round

Michigan State vs. Florida State

Nick Saban decides to stay at Michigan State until after the playoffs to give himself a chance at winning the national championship. Bill Burke was on fire, repeatedly burning the Seminole defense with the long ball to Plaxico Buress. Despite having the best athletes, Bobby Bowden still dosn't have a perfect season. Look for the Seminoles to be preseaon No. 1 in 2000.

Wisconsin vs. Virginia Tech

Ron Dayne, fresh off winning the Heisman Trophy, attempted to put one last stamp on a great career. But the Hokies defense was again stifling, shutting down Ron Dayne. After the game Tech players were quoted as saying, "Michael Vick proved today why he should have won the Heisman."

Kansas State vs. Nebraska

Nebraska faces Kansas State for the second time. Nothing different though. Despite the win, the offense continues to struggle, fumbling three times, prompting Frank Solich to say, "You will not see us run one more option play this year."

Tennessee vs. Alabama

And Tennessee after beating Alabama 21-7 earlier in the year, ran into a much different Crimson Tide team. Shaun Alexander runs wild and Alabama rolls on.

Semifinals

Michigan State vs. Nebraska

Despite being a heavy underdog in the Fiesta Bowl, the Spartans win again. The nation's No. 1 rush defense had little problem with a Nebraska offense that was minus the option.

Virginia Tech vs. Alabama

Virginia Tech and Alabama battled in the Rose Bowl. Alabama's spread offense left quarterback Andrew Zow vulnerable. Corey Moore single-handedly beats the Tide.

Championship

Michigan State vs. Virginia Tech

Who would have thought that Michigan State Virginia Tech would determine the National Champion in the Sugar Bowl? Michael Vick continued to play with poise, driving the Hokies 67 yards with time expiring to beat the Spartans 24 to 21.

So maybe the BCS was right. Virginia Tech should be in the championship game.
