New York, NY, September 3, 2003 - This week's SPORTS ILLUSTRATED features sports in the state of South Carolina, as a part of the 50 state-specific sections that are being published in the magazine in conjunction with SI's yearlong 50th anniversary celebration.

Identifying the Southern 500 as an event unique to the state, the six-page feature also includes an accompanying essay by University of South Carolina head football coach Lou Holtz, who is enjoying his second coaching stint in Columbia, plus a wide range of facts, figures and photographs highlighting the most memorable moments and personalities that have shaped the Palmetto State's sports landscape.

The South Carolina edition hits newsstands beginning today Wednesday, September 3, 2003 . Newsstand copies in South Carolina feature a cover-flap identifying the special South Carolina section.

Highlights from the special section include:

  • "Palmetto and Pigskin," in which once-retired coach Lou Holtz explains why he returned to the state and the Gamecocks.

  • "Hearts Racing," in which SI scribe Mark Bechtel takes a look at the history of NASCAR's Southern 500 at Darlington, as the Raceway hosted its final Labor Day weekend race. The event has been a Darlington fixture during the holiday weekend for 53 years.

  • The Poll: South Carolinians weigh in on sports in a Harris Interactive poll that found these results:
