Milwaukee Native and Bucks' Head Coach Terry Porter Writes How There's More to Wisconsin Than Football and Farms

New York, NY, October 1, 2003 - This week's SPORTS ILLUSTRATED highlights the sports scene in the state of Wisconsin, marking the 12th of 50 state-specific sections to be published in the magazine as part of SI's yearlong 50th anniversary celebration.

Identifying a Green Bay Packers Game at Lambeau Field as an event unique to the state, the six-page feature also includes an accompanying essay by Milwaukee native and Bucks' Head Coach Terry Porter , and a wide range of facts, figures and photographs highlighting the most memorable moments and personalities that have shaped Wisconsin's sports landscape.

The Wisconsin edition will hit newsstands on Wednesday, October 1, 2003 . Newsstand copies in Wisconsin will feature a cover-flap identifying the special Wisconsin section.

Highlights from the special section include:

  • Attending a Green Bay Packers game at Lambeau Field is like going to church on Sunday, and for many Wisconsinites, a rite of passage in life, explains SI writer Josh Elliott in "Field of Dreams."
  • In "Basket Case," Milwaukee native and Bucks' Coach Terry Porter shares his thoughts on how basketball in Wisconsin has b
ecome increasingly more relevant in a state known for football, cheese and beer.
  • The Poll: Wisconsinites weighed in on their state's sports scene in a Harris Interactive poll that found these results:
      o Greatest athlete....................Brett Favre (50%)
      o State's biggest rival...............Illinois (44%)
o Favorite sports to watch on TV.......Football (86%)
      o State's biggest rivalry..............Packers - Bears (32%)

  • Enemy of the State: Warren Sapp of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who viciously blindsided Packers tackle Chad Clifton last season received (27%) of this vote, beating out Randy Moss (20%) and Mike Ditka (8%) for Wisconsin's biggest sports villain title. Wisconsin's most hated team? The Chicago Bears (45%).
  • Greatest Moment - Editor's pick: The Green Bay Packers victory over the Dallas Cowboys in the 1967 NFL title game in which the temperature dipped down to -46°. The Packers beat the Cowboys 21-17 on quarterback Bart Starr's one-yard TD plunge with 13 seconds left in the game, giving them their third straight league championship and introducing the phrase, frozen tundra, into the lexicon of professional sports.
