SPORTS ILLUSTRATED KICKS OFF 50th ANNIVERSARY TOUR IN NEWPORT, RHODE ISLAND JULY 11-13

Football Field-Size Interactive Site Features Activities and Special Events for All Ages

What: America’s Sports Illustrated: 50 Years, 50 States, 50 Sports In recognition of its 50th Anniversary, SPORTS ILLUSTRATED is touching communities across the country with a yearlong nationwide celebration of sports in America. The Toyota Presents Sports Illustrated’s 50th Anniversary Tour is a football field-size interactive site constructed to bring SPORTS ILLUSTRATED to life for fans across the country. Complete with a main stage to showcase a variety of entertainment – SI’s one-of-a-kind sports experience will feature activities and special events that define the American sports landscape. Beginning with Rhode Island by celebrating the Newport Sailing Regatta and Tennis Week at the International Tennis Hall of Fame, the Tour is a key element in SI’s 50th Anniversary multi-media program. It will mirror state-specific coverage in the magazine by visiting unique sporting events in 25 states from July 2003-July 2004. Admission to the Anniversary Tour is free.

The grassroots sports experience will cover nearly a football field’s worth of real estate and will include:

Toyota Field, an enclosed theater that will feature an original film highlighting the greatest sports moments of the past 50 years as selected by the editors of SI.

Best Buy’s “Best Seat in the House,” which will showcase the latest consumer electronic innovations for catching your favorite teams.

Starter will feature the following three elements: an exhibit profiling the Starter All-American Teen from each state; the Starter/Shaq Dunkman, an interactive basketball experience; and other baseball, basketball, football and soccer challenges.

An SI cyberimaging station, where guests can have their photo digitally reproduced on the cover of SI. The Tour’s footprint will also highlight the past 50 years in sports through the eyes of the magazine, including some of its most memorable covers and great photography.

Live entertainment, including athletic performances and other special appearances will be featured on the Tour’s main stage. Local participants from the YMCA and parks and recreation, SI’s 50th Anniversary community outreach partners, will also be a part of the main stage activities.
