Sports Illustrated's 50th Anniversary
Mass. appeal

1930 Marathon
The Red Sox are a religion in the Bay State. SI's E.M. Swift explains why Boston's Biblical baseball misfortunes are a unifying force. And Tim Layden chronicles how the Boston Marathon -- begun in 1897 and contested for 107 years without interruption -- became the hallowed, old-school American athletic tradition it is today. Plus, read SI Flashback stories about former Sportsmen of the Year Bobby Orr, Bill Russell and Carl Yastrzemski; view a gallery of every Bruins, Celtics, Patriots and Red Sox cover; or submit your own Bay State sports memory.
