The truth is inelastic when it comes comes to the 88th World Series. It is impossible to stretch. It isn't necessary to appraise the nine days just past from some distant horizon of historical perspective. Classic SI cover Howlin' Wolf A spindly kid from Farragut Academy, by way of South Carolina, Kevin Garnett went from high school to the pros to becoming the highest-paid athlete in team sports within four short seasons. "He signed a contract for so much money," wrote Sports Illustrated's Leigh Montville in 1999, "that the people in charge scared themselves into action ... He is the kid who broke the NBA bank."

High school
hockey
SI columnist Steve Rushin calls his home state the Land of 10,000 Kinds of Hockey. Minnesotans, he explains, have as many varieties of hockey as the Inuit do of snow. And there's nothing in Minnesota to match the state high school hockey tournament. Plus, SI.com digs into the Sports Illustrated archives to find photos, Flashbacks and other significant moments in the state's sports history.

ENEMY OF THE STATE
Brett Favre
He was the Enemy in two other Vikings hotbeds, North and South Dakota, so Favre's victory here is hardly a surprise. Minnesotans' most hated opponents are Favre's Packers (80%), Steinbrenner's New York Yankees (4%) and the University of Wisconsin (2%).
