FLASHBACK
1971: As Good As It Gets
Nebraska beat Oklahoma in a '71 showdown that had all the stuff of legend
In the land of the pickup truck and cream gravy for breakfast, down where the wind can blow through the walls of a diner and into the grieving lyrics of a country song on a jukebox -- down there in dirt-kicking Big Eight territory -- they played a football game on Thanksgiving Day that was mainly for the quarterbacks on the field and for self-styled gridiron intellectuals everywhere.

SI COVERS
Classic SI cover Huskers' two On New Year's Day 1972, the Nebraska Cornhuskers overwhelmed Bear Bryant's Alabama Crimson Tide 38-6 in the Orange Bowl and earned themselves -- and legendary coach Bob Devaney -- a second straight national title. The win capped a remarkable season and provided payback for Nebraska's 39-28 and 34-7 bowl losses to Alabama following the 1965 and 1966 seasons.
