For one day in December 2001 -- as the 2002 Olympic Winter Games Torch Relay made its way through New England --- Lebanon, N.H., was at the center of the Olympic universe.

And for a town and a region that has sent numerous athletes to compete in the Games, the celebration that accompanied the torch was a fitting tribute.

“This was a tremendous event for our community,” said Cindy Heath, director of the city’s Recreation and Parks Department. “Everyone got involved and we had more than 5,000 spectators along the route. It was an inspiration for all of our residents.”

More than two years after Lebanon made its contribution to the Olympic Torch Relay, that dedication to, and support for, recreation has earned it the title of Sports Illustrated Sportstown for New Hampshire.

The city’s commitment to sports and recreation starts with the Recreation and Parks Department, which develops and provides city-sponsored programming, and works with local organizing groups to facilitate additional sporting opportunities for youth and adults. Among the many programs available are baseball, basketball, football, soccer, hiking, kayaking and lacrosse. The Department also organizes more than 100 special events annually, from a summer concert series to sports festivals and road races. With all of that variety, there is literally something for everyone.

“One of the things we pride ourselves on is our ability to meet the changing needs of the community,” said Heath. “Our success in this area is attributable to the hard work and dedication of our staff and volunteers as well as our many partner agencies and the local school district.”

In addition to the plethora of available activities, Lebanon residents also have a variety of top-notch recreation facilities at their disposal. In the past few years, the city has added to its stable, opening a new skatepark and an outdoor community pool, both of which are the result of hard work and community support.

“We at the department are proud of the support we receive from residents, businesses and local officials,” said Heath, who’s been with the organization for 21 years. “Over the years, people have come to see the tremendous value of recreation and sports programs and that has enabled us to do exciting things with and for the community.”

The community’s affinity for recreation means that Lebanon -- often referred to as “the Crossroads of New England” because of its central location in the region -- can now add a new moniker: Sports Illustrated Sportstown.
