Panther on the Prowl
As the quarterback at Pitt, Dan Marino showed flashes of the brilliant player he would become in the NFL. Marino, who was born in Pittsburgh, flourished in his junior year when he threw 37 touchdown passes and was named an All-American, while rewriting the schools record books. He became a starter midway through his freshman season and the Panthers reached a bowl game in each of Marino's four years with the team.

FLASHBACK |
1986: Not An Ordinary Joe
In the often murky world of college athletics, Penn State coach Joe Paterno is a beacon of integrity -- and he knows how to win As this year's Sportsman of the Year, we choose a tenured professor who wears glasses thicker than storm windows, a jacket and tie, white socks and pants legs that indicate continual fear of flash floods. He goes about 5 ft. 10 in., 165 and looks less like a football coach than a CPA for an olive oil firm.
