In observance of Veterans' Day, SI.com presents this gallery, beginning with Ted Williams, who entered active duty with the Navy in 1943, one year after winning the AL triple crown. Williams served three years and was certified as a Naval Aviator in 1944. The Red Sox great hit 521 home runs and had a lifetime .344 batting average.
