ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Rookie Matt Adams of the St. Louis Cardinals, who is batting .542 in eight games, has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right oblique.

Adams hasn't played since he had two hits in a 7-3 loss to Philadelphia on Sunday. He was scratched from Monday's game at Washington after complaining of soreness.

The 24-year-old Adams has three home runs, eight RBIs and a 1.042 slugging percentage in 24 at-bats as the backup first baseman. The DL move was made retroactive to Monday.

The Cardinals purchased the contract of infielder Jermaine Curtis from Triple-A Memphis in time for Friday night's game against the Pittsburgh Pirates. The 25-year-old Curtis, a right-handed hitter, was a fifth-round pick in 2008.
