CHICAGO (AP) Suspended shortstop Jhonny Peralta will work out with the Detroit Tigers before Wednesday's game at the Chicago White Sox.

Peralta accepted a 50-game suspension from Major League Baseball on Aug. 5 as part of its investigation into Biogenesis of America, a Florida anti-aging clinic accused of distributing banned performance-enhancing drugs.

Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski made the announcement about Peralta before Tuesday's game at U.S. Cellular Field after meeting with Tigers players.

Dombrowski said no decision has been made on whether to activate Peralta. The two-time All-Star, who has been working out in the Dominican Republic, is eligible to return on Sept. 27 for the Tigers' final three regular-season games in Miami.

Rookie Jose Iglesias has taken over as Detroit's regular shortstop in Peralta's absence. Iglesias was acquired on July 30 from Boston as part of a three-team trade.

If Peralta comes back, Iglesias will remain in that spot.

"I will say and he (Peralta) has been told and we have cleared it up, he is not coming back as our everyday shortstop," Dombrowski said.

Iglesias missed games last Friday and Saturday with shin splints, but Dombrowski said that did not factor into the decision or timing to have Peralta rejoin the team. He also said the timing was not related to the term of the suspension.

"Really you are under some obligation to attempt to try to give him the opportunity to try to come back, because it's a negotiated settlement of a 50-day suspension that the commissioner's office and the players association have agreed upon," Dombrowski said.

The final decision to activate will be based on whether Peralta can help the Tigers.

"Do we think he gives us a chance to be better at some point?" Dombrowski said. "We're trying to win a championship. That factors into it, too."
