Unification? King must compromise for Holyfield-Lewis to happenPosted: Saturday October 24, 1998 09:45 AM
Dino Duva, who's involved in promoting WBC Champion Lennox Lewis, told me Friday that the unification battle between his guy and Evander Holyfield will most likely take place March 13th at Madison Square Garden in New York. Duva cautioned, though, that Holyfield promoter Don King will have to come to his senses concerning the contract. King wants options on Lewis' future fights. Duva and Lewis' other management members will never agree to that but they have agreed to the numbers: $8 million for Lewis plus a percentage of the pay-per-view gate and $20 million for Holyfield. The winner would have to then satisfy the WBA and fight No. 1 contender Henry Akinwande, who has yet to be re-licensed since it was discovered he had hepatitis. Tyson: from one fight to anotherOn another heavyweight front, Mike Tyson went from victory at his hearing in Las Vegas right into the frying pan in New York. Attorneys for Don King deposed Tyson for three days in conjunction with their defense of the $100 million lawsuit filed by the fighter against his former promoter. Tyson reportedly headed back to Maryland to be with his wife and children. Tyson looks physically fit but needs to get back into fighting shape. His advisor, Shelley Finkel, told me he's working on a comeback opponent. The names include Shannon Briggs and Lou Savarese as we reported last week. Finkel also told me that Tyson's coming out party will be in January in Las Vegas.
