KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) -- Germany defeated Malaysia 4-3 in a game played Monday in the Ninth Sultan Azlan Shah Cup tournament at the Malaysian National Hockey Stadium.

It was Malaysia's third successive loss, while Germany defended its unbeaten record and stayed in contention for a place in the final.

Malaysia had rallied to a 3-3 tie before Germany's Bjorn Michel provided the killer blow in the 56th minute via a free hit from penalty corner specialist Jan Peter Tewes.

Malaysia started off strongly when Chairil Anwar Aziz scored the opening goal in the first minute after connecting a square from Shaiful Azli.

But the early lead proved too difficult to maintain. After a slow start, the Germans started to break down Malaysia's defense. They kept goalkeeper Mohd Nasihin Nubli busy staving off a number of attacks.

The heavy pressure eventually took its toll on Mohd Nasihin and Malaysia's defenders when Christoph Eimer took advantage of the hesitant Nor Azlan Bakar to connect a cross from Stefan Saliger for the equalizer in the 20th minute.

The Germans then took the lead in the 24th minute as Bjorn Emmerling shot off a penalty corner attempt. Two minutes later, Saliger added Germany's third goal when he snuck in the ball into the semicircle and unleashed a powerful shot that caught Malaysia's defense off guard.

Malaysia reduced the margin when Suhaimi Ibrahim pushed in the ball during a penalty corner melee in the 32nd minute after S. Kuhan had his best shot of the game.

The Malaysians staged a comeback in the second half and found the tying goal in the 44th minute through a penalty stroke awarded by South Korean umpire Woo Jong Ho.

The stroke came about when an attempt by Chua Boon Huat, playing as a forward for the first time, was obstructed by the German defense.

Kuhan calmly beat the helpless German goalkeeper Christian Schulte for Malaysia's equalizer.

Nevertheless, the Germans stayed aggressive and positioned their team for the free hit taken by Michel, which sailed past a sea of Malaysian defenders.
