Katarina Witt fires adviser Posted: Saturday January 23, 1999 03:13 PM
BERLIN (AP) -- Former East German Olympic figure skating champion Katarina Witt has cut ties with her longtime advisor, Dieter Dehm. Witt, 33, who won the Olympic gold medal in figure skating in 1984 and 1988, announced the decision during her current U.S. show tour, the German sports news agency SID said. Witt said that Dehm, without her knowledge, had been elected a deputy party chairman of the former East German communists, now called the Party of Democratic Socialism. "I don't want to have anything to do with politics anymore and won't let myself be pulled into it," Witt said. Witt has been criticized in the past for defending aspects East Germany's communist system.
