![]() Your take: Name a horse Posted: Wednesday May 26, 1999 07:07 PM
CNN/SI gave you the chance to come up with the perfect name for the horse you know can go the distance. Names had to follow the guidelines and be followed by an explanation of how or why you picked it. Check back during CNN/SI's Belmont Stakes coverage for a chance to pick a winner from the best ones in an instant poll. Sally's Angel In memory of my little sister Sally who passed away in 1997. I bet on a horse called Sally's Sister for her a few years ago. Even though, I lost the bet, I still liked the name. -- Betsy Fithian, Sagamore, OH Indurain Named after the 4-time Tour de France cycling champion, Miguel Indurain. This cycling hero not only possessed tremendous drive and determination, but was also an incredible physical specimen (abnormally large lung capacity, low resting heart rate, etc.). I believe the cyclist would be a good model for any race horse to aspire to. In addition, if the horse is fast in bad weather, it can be said that he is good "in du rain." -- Vincent Chew, Hong Kong Titanic Rising Just seems to be a good name for a young horse that is a rising star. Like the big ship returning. -- Kevin Lysne, Nevada, IA Filibuster It's simple and catchy. -- Justin Cook, Denton, TX Miss Chiff My horse's name is Miss Chiff, because everywhere she goes, she's nothing but trouble for any other horses that may get in her way. -- Janine Cox, Ft. Lauderdale, FL Rose Petal I chose this name because I think all horses are beautiful and so are roses. Plus the Kentucky Derby is the Tournament of Roses. -- April Peacock, Durham, NC Affirmed In Silver Tairaterces Secretariat spelled backwards. -- Ron Bates, Covington, KY Advanced Creation This is a name that I came up with for my fantasy sports teams. I use it on my free fantasy sports teams. To me it generates both and sense of mystery and anticipation. I think it would be a great name for a race horse. Don't you? -- Barry A Stockbruger, Regina, Canada Peanutbutter Charm It's a mixture of two cereals, Peanutbutter Crunch and Lucky Charms. Why name a horse after cereal? Why not? a win would be magically delicious. -- Mike Laming, Maybee, MI Down The Stretch "And down the stretch they come" the closing words of the track announcer in the Run for the Roses. -- George Berry, Woodland Hills, CA Mr. IQ. Intelligent horse that will use strategy to gain an advantage in his race. The letters IQ are also the first letter of my father's name and the first letter of his last name. -- Anthony Quiteno, San Francisco, CA Potential Disaster Kentucky Blue The name invokes the spirit of Kentucky, the Kentucky Derby and the Bluegrass. It seems only fitting that a winning name for a Kentucky Derby winner should have such style. -- Frank Figgs, Shelbyville, KY Good To Go A phase we use at work when everything is in its place, complete, and ready for action. My horse would be Good To Go and ready to win any race. -- Jerry Werner, Colleyville, TX Tres Royale Tres Royale is the name I would pick for my horse because I would expect him/her to win the three most important races (tres is Latin for three) and become instant royalty! -- Louise Winters, Bulger, PA Perelandra The horse's name shall be Perelandra. It comes from a book that is fictional in plot, but contains about as much as truth in allegory that one could muster in between two covers. A horse is much the same. Its name and stats only are a cover for the horse that it really is inside. When it wins, if it wins, that is the truth contained inside which cause its name to remain in the hearts of its fans for all time. -- Jeremiah Spencer, Moscow,ID Cash-in-a-Flash I would name my horse Cash-in-a-Flash. Any questions? -- David Wallace, Norristown, PA Empty Wallet It definitely takes a lot of money to buy and train a winner. -- John Turner, Chapel Hill, NC Glorious Hangover Because the morning after my horse wins the Derby, I wouldn't necessarily remember where all the flowers came from. -- CJ Frenie, Alexandria, VA Forget About It I chose this name for several reasons. One of those reasons is because it is a line in my favorite movie: Donnie Brasco. Another reason is because if you were to ever ask me if my horse was going to win I would say, "forget about it." -- Brian Sweeney, Deer Park, NY Down Pour A horse is trained to have strength, speed and to give all he or she has got through out the whole race. Just like the name suggests, rain comes down hard(strength), fast (speed), and lasts for a while (duration of the 1 1/4). I know, a simple name but to the point. -- Joe Baia, Laruel, MD Chasin'thewind That's what my horse would be chasing -- the wind. Not rising or falling with the level of competition that surrounds him/her, but always racing against the strongest forces of nature. Chasin'thewind has the ultimate goal and expectation in mind. -- Andrew J. Kasten, Dallas, TX Deputy's Secretary Have the Sire be Deputy Minister and the Dam came from the Secretariat line. -- Grant Palmer, Lexington, KY Silence Is Golden It's a name that I can picture being used if two of my favorite horses had ever been bred together. "Winning Colors" and "Sunday Silence" -- D.J. Russell, Oklahoma City, OK Columbine's Spirit I would name a horse "Columbine's Spirit". In my mind and heart, I feel that a horse with the honor of bearing that name would show the world that even under the most horrific conditions, the Spirit lives on, and is a winner in every sense of the word. -- Nancy Bartlett, Glen, NH Approaching Glory A horse with the ability to win the MOST prestigious race should have as good a name to go with him. -- Vince Brown, Harrisburg, PA Quiet Jubilation For those people who are happy something happened but can't express it out loud. Also in honor of the hearing impaired. -- Kevin Garland, Lexington,KY Why Two Kay It's the perfect name for the horse of the new millenium. -- Andrew Rohde, Saginaw, MI
