ATLANTA (CNN/SI) - Facts on the possible entries in the 124th Preakness. Entries are based on career earnings and limited to 14 horses. Odds are in parentheses.
Charismatic (6-1)
| Jockey: Chris Antley |
| Trainer: D. Wayne Lukas |
| Post Position: 6 |
|
Comming off a stunning win in the Derby as a 31-1 shot.
Charismatic's 15 starts make him the most seasoned of the 14
entrants. A son of 1990 Preakness winner Summer Squall,
Charismatic was coming off a 2 1/2 length score in the Lexington
Stakes when he surprised the racing world with his Kentucky
Derby victory. The chestnut colt also won the Santa Catalina
Stakes this year. Owned by Bob and Beverly Lewis, who own 1997
Derby and Preakness winner Silver Charm, Charismatic has four
wins in 15 lifetime starts, including a claiming-race win on
February 11. Jockey Chris Antley now has captured the Derby
twice, but is still looking for his first Preakness win.
Excellent Meeting (5-1)
| Jockey: Kent Desormeaux |
| Trainer: Bob Baffert |
| Post Position: 7 |
|
Last year's Breeders' Cup juvenile fillies winner will try to
become just the fifth female to own Preakness glory. Excellent
Meeting will be making her 13th career start and is seeking her
eighth win. Kent Desormeaux, who has past riding titles at
Pimlico, will be aboard.
Cat Thief (8-1)
| Jockey: Mike Smith |
| Trainer: D. Wayne Lukas |
| Post Position: 3 |
|
Had a great trip and ran a game race in the Derby before being
caught by longshot Charismatic in the stretch. Cat Thief has
just two wins in 12 lifetime starts, but has hit the board in 11
of those races. Jockey Mike Smith returns to the Triple Crown
circuit this year after spending 1998 at home recovering from
back injuries suffered in a fall. He won the Preakness with
Prairie Bayou in 1993. Trainer D. Wayne Lukas has won the
Preakness four times among his unprecedented 11 Triple Crown
victories.
Vicar (30-1)
| Jockey: Robby Albarado |
| Trainer: Carl Nafzger |
| Post Position: 13 |
|
It's hard to believe that a horse mentioned in almost
everyone's top three for the Derby could fall to a 30-1
also-ran. Don't buy it. Vicar is hero of the Florida route to the
Triple Crown, having captured the Fountain Of Youth and the
Florida Derby along the way. Vicar's last race was a third-place
finish in the Blue Grass. Jockey Shane Sellers was aboard in
the Derby but Nafzger opted to switch to Robbie Albarado for
Saturday.
Menifee (5-2)
| Jockey: Pat Day |
| Trainer: Elliott Walden |
| Post Position: 5 |
|
Menifee's strong race to a second-place finish in the Derby has
the oddsmaker installing him as a 5-2 favorite for the
Preakness. Should get a much better trip than his start from the
unfavorable 19th post two weeks ago. Trainer Elliott Walden
saddled Victory Gallop to victory in last year's Belmont
Stakes after second-place efforts in both the Derby and the
Preakness. Jockey Pat Day chose Menifee over two others to get him
to the Preakness Stakes winner's circle for an amazing fifth
time this decade. He has won the Preakness five times overall,
including three straight from 1994-96.
Kimberlite Pipe (20-1)
| Jockey: Shane Sellers |
| Trainer: Dallas Stewart |
| Post Position: 2 |
|
Shane Sellers gets the mount on Kimberlite Pipe after riding
Vicar to an 18th-place finish in the Derby. Trainer Dallas
Stewart worked under the tutelage of trainer D.Wayne Lukas
before branching out on his own. Kimberlite Pipe has four wins
in 12 career outings and earnings of over $500,000. The Take Me
Out colt ran fourth in the Blue Grass Stakes prior to his Derby
start. He won half of his six 2-year-old races, but has just a
win and a show effort in six races this season. Sellers' best
Preakness effort was a second-place finish aboard Skip Away in
1996.
Stephen Got Even (10-1)
| Jockey: Gary Stevens |
| Trainer: Nick Zito |
| Post Position: 11 |
|
Stephen Got Even was 3-for-3 in 1999 before finishing a
disappointing 14th in the Derby. But Zito rebounded Louis
Quatorze from a 16th place finish in the 1996 Derby with a
Preakness triumph. The Gallery Furniture.com Stakes winner
is the son of 1992 Belmont Stakes winner A.P. Indy. Chris
McCarron, who rode Stephen Got Even for the first time in the
Derby, won't be aboard in the Preakness after suffering a leg
injury in a fall on Tuesday. Zito was able to secure Gary
Stevens when his mount Silverbulletday opted for the
Black-Eyed Susan.
Adonis (30-1)
| Jockey: Jorge Chavez |
| Trainer: Nick Zito |
| Post Position: 9 |
|
Wood Memorial winner Adonis had the rail in the Derby and
finished 17th, so trainer Nick Zito went for the nine hole this
time even though the rail was still available. Zito won this
event with Louis Quatorze in 1996. The Kris S colt has three
wins in seven lifetime starts. Adonis is one of 10 horses to
run in the first two legs of the Triple Crown.
Worldly Manner (12-1)
| Jockey: Jerry Bailey |
| Trainer: S. Bin Suroor |
| Post Position: 10 |
|
Worldly Manner won three of four sophomore starts, under the
tutelage of Baffert before being scooped up by the Godolphin
Stables and carted off to Dubai to train. He won the first of
two 'Derby Trials' held by Godolphin in Dubai. However, this
will be his second official start. Benefits from having Hall
of Famer jockey Jerry Bailey. Bailey won the 1991 Preakness
aboard Hansel.
Torrid Sand (60-1)
| Jockey: Tim Doocy |
| Trainer: Randy Morse |
| Post Position: 1 |
|
Was a victim of the Valhol fiasco which cost him a start in the
Kentucky Derby. Unraced since a third-place finish in the
Arkansas Derby on April 10. He may be credited with second
once the investigation regarding Valhol and the use of
an electric stimulating device is resolved. The Line
In The Sand colt has run in the money in all five career starts.
Torrid Sand did not race as a 2-year-old but won a pair of races
at Gulfstream Park prior to the Arkansas Derby.
Badge (50-1)
| Jockey: Mike Luzzi |
| Trainer: Joseph Aquilino |
| Post Position: 4 |
|
One of the three newcomers to the Triple Crown circuit, Badge is
coming off a fourth-place effort in the Wood Memorial April
10. The Air Forbes Won colt has had eight career races -- all at
Aqueduct in New York. The Gotham Stakes winner has won 3-of-5
races this season. Mike Luzzi will be aboard the colt for the
first time.
Valhol (99-1)
| Jockey: Edgar Prado |
| Trainer: Dallas Keen Post |
| Post Position: 12 |
|
Valhol's 'shocking' win in the Arkansas Derby stirred up a lot
of controversy but the courts intervened and Valhol made
an appearance in the Derby. The Diazo colt turned in a
15th-place clunker, realizing how tough it is to win without
a jolt. Valhol picks up Edgar Prado, who replaces Willie
Martinez, who took over for Billy Patin following the Arkansas
Derby incident. The morning-line odds tell the story, only
a tow truck could help the gelded Valhol, who has just four
starts under his belt with only the tainted Arkansas Derby
'win' to his credit.
Patience Game (30-1)
| Jockey: Corey Nakatani |
| Trainer: Alex Hassinger |
| Post Position: 8 |
|
Another newcomer to the Triple Crown scene, Patience Game is
coming off a 2 1/4-length win in the Derby Trail and has won two
straight. The lightly-raced colt by Woodman has just four
career starts, tying for the least in the field with Valhol, and
has never been worse than second. Jockey Corey Nakatani
finished 13th aboard Desert Hero in the Derby and has been aboard
Patience Game in all his outings.
