Derby didn't run away with ratings Posted: Monday May 08, 2000 05:46 PM
NEW YORK (AP) -- ABC's coverage of the Kentucky Derby didn't run away with an overwhelming crowd. The last of the network's 26 straight Derby broadcasts drew a 6.6 overnight rating and 17 share, Nielsen Media Research said Monday. The rating, based on the country's largest 48 markets, is the same as last year's for the race held on the first Saturday in May. That 6.6 is the second-lowest for ABC, which recorded a 6.4 overnight in 1995. ABC began televising the Kentucky Derby in 1975 and has covered all three Triple Crown races since 1987. NBC outbid ABC for a new, five-year thoroughbred racing deal in October and will start showing Triple Crown races in 2001.
