To the max Dr. Max wins Maryland Breeders' CupPosted: Saturday May 20, 2000 07:44 PM
BALTIMORE (AP) -- Dr. Max put on a strong finishing kick and overtook Moon Over Prospect in the final strides for a surprising victory in Saturday's $200,000 Maryland Breeders' Cup, one of several stakes races on the Preakness undercard. Dr. Max, at 14-1 the longest shot in the seven-horse field, caught Moon Over Prospect in the deep stretch and put his nose in front as the two crossed the finish line. Ridden by Shane Sellers, Dr. Max paid $31.40, $11.80 and $5.80, while the runner-up -- at odds of 9-1 -- returned $9.40 and $5.80. Crucible was third and Memory Tap fourth. Grand Hope, the 9-5 favorite, and Yes It's True, a 2-1 choice who won this race last year, finished fifth and seventh, respectively. It was in this race a year ago that a man made his way onto the track as the horses came roaring down the stretch and somehow managed to avoid hitting him. The man, 22-year-old Lee Ferrell, punched at two horses, including the leader, Artax, but the horses passed on either side of him and there were no injuries. Also, Roza Robata ran off with the $200,000 Pimlico Distaff, beating Bella Chiarra by 41/2 lengths. The 2-1 favorite, with Pat Day aboard, returned $6 covered the 1 1-8 miles in 1:49 4-5. In the $200,000 Dixie Stakes for 3-year-olds and up, Quiet Resolve won by a nose over Haami, returning $8.80 for the victory. The winner, ridden by Robby Albarado, covered the 1 1-8 miles in 1:50 2-5 and earned $120,000 for Sam-Son Farm. In the $100,000 Donald Schaefer Handicap, 4-5 favorite Ecton Park beat The Groom Is Red by 8 1/4 lengths. The winner, trained by Elliott Walden, paid $3.80 for the win, covering the 1 1-8 miles in 1:49 1-5. Ecton Park, ridden by Day, won for the sixth time in 17 career starts. "The track was a little bit sticky but this horse kind of went on with it," Day said of Ecton Park, racing for the first time since a fifth-place finish on March 26 in the Dubai World Cup. In the $100,000 Sir Barton Stakes for 3-year-olds, Broken Vow defeated Grundlefoot by three-quarters of a length. Broken Vow, ridden by Shane Sellers, paid $8.60 and covered the 1 1-16th miles in 1:43.2-5.
