BALTIMORE (AP) -- Kentucky Derby winner Monarchos began preparations for the Preakness with a gallop of 1 1/2 miles Monday at Pimlico Race Course.

After the session, trainer John Ward Jr. was convinced that his horse is ready to run well in Saturday's race.

"He did everything I wanted him to do today," Ward said. "This horse is deceptive how easily he gets across the ground. Basically, I'm finished training him for the race. Now I just need to prepare him."

Monarchos was among the first Preakness entrants to arrive at Pimlico, checking in four days after his winning run in the Kentucky Derby on May 6. The gray horse has settled in nicely in Stall 40, and now can take it easy until Saturday.

"He's in a good frame of mind here," Ward said. "Wednesday, he'll gallop, but nothing big like today. He'll gallop easy again Thursday and school at the gate. I don't see anything standing in the way of him giving a top performance."

Clem Florio, who sets the odds at Pimlico, has installed Monarchos as the 2-1 favorite in the early line. Congaree was at 5-2, followed by Kentucky Derby favorite Point Given at 3-1.
