Horse-by-Horse Capsules Horses are listed in order of post position. | | |
1. U S S TINOSA
Jockey: Kent Desormeaux
|
Trainer: Jerry Hollendorfer
|
Odds: 15-1
|
Outlook: A lightly-raced horse, USS Tinosa has not competed since
finishing fifth in the Santa Anita Derby on April 6. The grey
colt was second in the San Felipe Stakes in his start before
Santa Anita. He was unable to run in the Kentucky Derby due to
insufficient earnings. Desormeaux, who has been aboard the
horse in his last three races, gets the call again.
| |
2. MAGIC WEISNER
Jockey: Phil Teator
|
Trainer: Nancy Alberts
|
Odds: 40-1
|
Outlook: The Maryland-bred son of Ameri Valay could be the sentimental
choice among the Pimlico betting public. He has trained just 18
miles away at Laurel Park and will make the trip to Pimlico on
Saturday morning. The horse had a five-race winning streak
snapped by Smoked Em in the Federico Stakes his last time out.
The horse has finished in the money in eight of 10 races.
Teator has been aboard Magic Weisner the last six rides.
| |
3. STRAIGHT GIN
Jockey: Robby Albarado
|
Trainer: Nick Zito
|
Odds: 30-1
|
Outlook: The horse won twice over the winter at Gulfstream Park. His last
outing was a fourth-place finish behind Harlan's Holiday in the
Grade I Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland. His best races are when
he is at or near the lead, which will be a difficult task
against the speed horses at Pimlico.
| |
4. CRIMSON HERO
Jockey: Chris McCarron
|
Trainer: Nick Zito
|
Odds: 20-1
|
Outlook: A colt by Capote, Crimson Hero broke his maiden at Pimlico last
September and most recently was second to Kentucky Derby
runner-up Proud Citizen in the Lexington Stakes at Keeneland.
McCarron will ride the horse for the first time.
| |
5. MEDAGLIA D'ORO
Jockey: Jerry Bailey
|
Trainer: Bobby Frankel
|
Odds: 5-2
|
Outlook:
The lightly-raced colt finished fourth in the Kentucky Derby
after getting off to a terrible start. Trainer Bobby Frankel
responded by switching jockeys, replacing Laffit Pincay with
Jerry Bailey. Stuck behind a wall of horses, Medaglia d'Oro did
a respectable job moving up to fourth and will be a factor
Saturday. After winning his stakes debut at Santa Anita's Grade
II San Felipe Stakes, the El Prado colt battled Buddha down the
stretch in the Wood Memorial and lost by a head. The horse is
owned by Edmund Gann, who purchased him following his maiden win
at Arkansas in February.
| |
6. HARLAN'S HOLIDAY
Jockey: Edgar Prado
|
Trainer: Ken McPeek
|
Odds: 9-2
|
Outlook:
The colt became the latest Kentucky Derby favorite to fall by
the wayside, never threatening at Churchill Downs and finishing
seventh. He turned heads with Grade I wins at the Florida
Derby and Blue Grass Stakes in his previous two starts. Each of
his 11 starts have come since June and the Kentucky Derby was
the first to result in worse than a runner-up finish. He was
the longest-priced favorite in Kentucky Derby history at 6-1.
| |
7. EASYFROMTHEGITGO
Jockey: Donnie Meche
|
Trainer: Steve Asmussen
|
Odds: 15-1
|
Outlook: A Dehere-colt owned by James Cassels and Bob Zollars,
Easyfromthegitco has been pointed toward the Preakness. The
colt strung together three straight wins over the winter,
including the Lecomte Stakes, but lost the Louisiana Derby by a
nose to Repent. The horse was third behind Proud Citizen and
Crimson Hero in the Lexington Stakes.
| |
8. WAR EMBLEM
Jockey: Victor Espinoza
|
Trainer: Bob Baffert
|
Odds: 3-1
|
Outlook:
At 20-1, War Emblem led gate-to-wire in the Kentucky Derby,
making trainer Bob Baffert a Derby winner for the third time.
The Preakness might be more to War Emblem's liking since the
race is 1/16th of a mile shorter and the tighter turns favor
speed horses. War Emblem was a gate-to-wire victory at the
Grade II Illinois Derby at Sportsman's Park and went to
Baffert's barn after he was bought by Prince Ahmed bin Salman.
War Emblem is the son of Our Emblem.
| |
9. TABLE LIMIT
Jockey: Gary Stevens
|
Trainer: D. Wayne Lukas
|
Odds: 30-1
|
Outlook:
Lukas decided to saddle a second horse in the Preakness and went
for Table Limit, a $580,000 yearling purchase at the September
Keeneland Sale. The horse scored a pair of seven-furlong wins
during the spring meet at Keeneland after losing his first three
outings in California. The horse had been slated for the Peter
Pan Stakes on May 25, but was moved up after good workouts.
| |
10. BOOKLET
Jockey: Pat Day
|
Trainer: John Ward
|
Odds: 10-1
|
| Outlook:
Booklet was fourth behind Harlan's Holiday in the Blue Grass
Stakes but defeated the horse in the Holy Bull Stakes and the
Fountain of Youth Stakes. Ward has replaced jockey Jorge Chavez
with Pat Day, who has won the Preakness five times and has an
excellent reputation as a rider of speed horses. 'I think
Booklet's a dangerous weapon in Pat's hands,' Ward said.
Booklet is at his best when able to ease into the early lead,
but that will not be easy in the tight turns at Pimlico.
| |
11. MENACING DENNIS
Jockey: Mario Pino
|
Trainer: Jeff Bonde
|
Odds: 50-1
|
Outlook:
The most lightly raced member in the field with just four
lifetime starts. The Star de Naskra colt has made his last
three starts in California after breaking his maiden
impressively last summer at Monmouth Park. Victor Espinoza was
aboard for the horse's last race, when he was beaten by a head
in the Snow Chief Stakes at Hollywood Park. Espinoza will ride
Kentucky Derby winner War Emblem in the Preakness.
| |
12. PROUD CITIZEN
Jockey: Mike Smith
|
Trainer: D. Wayne Lukas
|
Odds: 6-1
|
Outlook:
The Gone West colt was a surprise second in the Kentucky Derby
and could give Lukas his record 14th Triple Crown victory and
sixth in the Preakness. Lukas' 13 Triple Crown wins tie him
with 'Sunny Jim' Fitzimmons for the all-time lead. The last
Preakness winner for Lukas was Charismatic in 1999. While
second, Proud Citizen did not post a serious challenge to War
Emblem at Churchill Downs. The horse almost was sent to the
barn after a seventh-place showing over 1 1/8 miles in the Santa
Anita Derby. But he won Keeneland's Coolmore Lexington Stakes
two weeks later -- his only two races of the year.
| |
13. EQUALITY
Jockey: Ramon Dominguez
|
Trainer: Graham Motion
|
Odds: 20-1
|
Outlook:
The Preakness long shot will try to use fresh legs to his
advantage. The son of Mt. Livermore has not raced since
finishing second in the Aventura Stakes at Gulfstream on April
6. Motion considered running Equality in the Kentucky Derby had
he won the Aventura, but instead pointed toward the Preakness.
Runs well at shorter distances and could be overmatched at
Pimlico.
