Baffert awarded compensation

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- A federal judge awarded trainer Bob Baffert $102,780 to cover expenses in his dispute with the California Horse Racing Board over a positive drug test.

The judge announced his ruling Tuesday, according to Neil Papiano, Baffert's attorney.

In April, a Los Angeles judge dismissed the board's case against Baffert, which stemmed from one of his horses testing positive for morphine at Hollywood Park in May 2000.

A CHRB spokesman said the board is appealing the April ruling and the judgment, which orders the board to reimburse Baffert for his legal and administrative expenses.

Two years ago, Baffert's horse, Nautical Look, won a race and then tested positive for morphine, a drug that is legal for therapeutic reasons but can't be in a horse's system on race day.

A second test of the horse's urine confirmed the positive test, but when Baffert sought to have blood from the horse tested, he was told that the CHRB's official laboratory had thrown away the sample.

Baffert trains War Emblem, the Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner, who will try to win the Triple Crown with a victory June 8 in the Belmont Stakes.
