One horse killed in accident Posted: Saturday June 08, 2002 4:53 PMNEW YORK (AP) -- One horse was killed and another was seriously injured when they collided Saturday in the fourth race on the Belmont Stakes' undercard. Imadeed, ridden by John Velazquez, and Pleasant County, with Eibar Coa aboard, went down and tossed their riders after rounding the final turn in the $65,000-added The WNBC for older fillies and mares. The 13-horse field was tightly bunched when Imadeed, who was briefly in the lead, fell first and Pleasant County tumbled over her. Imadeed was able to get up, but she fractured both sesamoid bones in her right front leg. Pleasant County, who sustained a fatal skull injury, remained prone on the track until she was taken away by horse ambulance. It was the second spill in two days for Velazquez, who was involved in a two-horse accident in Friday's Flash Stakes. His mount Windsor Lodge fell over the fallen Renegade Warrior. X-rays on Velazquez were negative Friday, but he had taken off his mounts in Saturday's first two races to visit a chiropractor. He returned in time to ride Imadeed. Velazquez re-injured his right knee, which was initially hurt Friday. He also complained of soreness, and was replaced on his other four mounts Saturday. Coa wasn't injured. |
