- Yarrow Brae is a chestnut son of 1981 Eclipse Award-winning two-year-old Deputy Minister, out of the Miswaki mare Bally Five.
- Yarrow Brae was bred in Kentucky by Pirates Associates then consigned as a yearling by Due Process Stable to the 1996 Keeneland January mixed sale through Hill 'n' Dale Sales Agency. Silver Oaks Farm paid $150,000 for the colt at that sale, then consigned him to the 1997 Barretts March 2-year-sale, where Demi O'Byrne signed a $310,000 sales slip on the current owners' behalf.
- Trainer D. Wayne Lukas won the Belmont Stakes three consecutive years with Tabasco Cat (1994), Thunder Gulch (1995) and Editor's Note (1996).
- Lukas bypassed the first two legs of the Triple Crown with Yarrow Brae. Instead, Yarrow Brae went to the Derby Trial on April 25th, in which his colt finished second; and most recently the Illinois Derby on May 9th where he earned his way to the Belmont Stakes with a three-quarter-length victory.
- "The Triple Crown came up a little quick for this colt," Lukas said. "We've always liked him and he ran good in the Derby Trial and that set him up for the Illinois Derby, where he ran a very strong race. It was imperative that he won the Illinois Derby to try this spot but he showed that he might be ready for the next level."
- Lukas' opinion on the Triple Crown thus far is similar to the norm. "Real Quiet is the one to beat, but he's no cinch because that is an elusive crown," he said. "This is a big step up for us, but he's got the pedigree and the combination of great tactical speed and the ability to stay. The Belmont catches this type of horse that is improving this time of year quite well. He fits the mold and maybe we can catch a break. The Belmont is a great race, it always is, and this will be a nice test."
