LITTLE ROCK (AP) -- Victory Gallop's nose-nipping triumph over Real Quiet in the Belmont Stakes made him the 10th Arkansas Derby horse to win a Triple Crown race.

Victory Gallop, who finished a close second to Real Quiet in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness, edged his rival Saturday in a photo finish to become the third Arkansas Derby participant to win the Belmont in the past 18 years.

Temperence Hill won the Arkansas Derby and Belmont in 1980. Caveat, second to Sunny's Halo in 1983 at the Arkansas Derby, also won the Belmont.

Besides Victory Gallop, the most recent Triple Crown winner to emerge from the Arkansas Derby was Grindstone, who won the Kentucky Derby in 1996.

The Belmont victory gives the Arkansas Derby two Triple Crown victories in the past three years, since the race was pushed back to three weeks before the Kentucky Derby. The Arkansas Derby was run two weeks before the Kentucky Derby from 1984-1995.

Other Triple Crown victors coming from the Arkansas Derby include: Sunny's Halo in the 1983 Kentucky Derby; Lil E. Tee in the 1992 Kentucky Derby; Elocutionist in the 1976 Preakness; Gate Dancer in the 1984 Preakness; and Tank's Prospect in the 1985 Preakness.
