Lasting impression: Julie Krone, who has announced her retirement, won in her final race at Hialeah Park. AP

HIALEAH, Fla. (AP) -- Julie Krone, in her final ride at Hialeah Park, guided Anguilla around fallen favorite Coretta coming off the far turn and overtook Winfama at the eighth pole to win the $200,000 Black Helen Handicap for fillies and mares Saturday.

Coretta, an Irish-bred who was sent off at 3-5 odds, was making a move from second when she suddenly lost her footing and skidded on her chest. I.C. Cindy, just behind Coretta, bumped the favorite and also had to be eased.

Both horses left the track under their own power and neither jockey was hurt.

"She seems to be fine," trainer Christophe Clement said of Coretta. "It looked bad, but she apparently came back OK. We'll check her out very carefully."

Anguilla inherited second place, then ran down Winfama to win by two lengths, covering the 1 1/8-mile turf course in 1:47 2-5. The 5-2 second favorite returned $7.20, $4.60 and $3.80.

Starry Dreamer closed with a rush for second, returning $7.40 and $4.80. Winfama held on for third and paid $6.20.

"I'm tickled to win, but it takes something away when it happens this way," Anguilla trainer Tom Skiffington said. "I just hope the mare is OK."

Krone, 35, racing's all-time top female jockey with more than 3,500 career wins, announced her retirement Thursday but is honoring her riding commitments through next weekend.

"I had a lot of horse," Krone said. "When I was going down the backside, my reins were just splashing around on her neck, she was going along so easily. She kept asking me -- Now? Now? -- and I had to keep telling her no."

Anguilla, a 4-year-old daughter of Seattle Slew, has won five of her past seven starts, finishing second in the other two. Saturday's win brought her lifetime earnings to $344,201.
