(Courtesy of http://www.kentuckyderby.com) DATES APPROVED FOR 2002 KENTUCKY DERBY FUTURE WAGER LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Jan. 14, 2002) - The Kentucky Racing Commission granted approval Monday to dates for Churchill Downs' 2002 Kentucky Derby Future Wager. The Kentucky Derby Future Wager (KDFW), which gives Kentucky Derby fans across North America the opportunity to wager on their Derby selections weeks and months in advance of the famed "Run for the Roses," enters its fourth year in 2002. The dates approved by the commission call for the wager's Pool 1 to be conducted from Feb. 14-17; Pool 2 is set for March 14-17; and Pool 3 is scheduled for April 4-7. All pools run from Thursday through Sunday. Churchill Downs also announced that it would change the wagering hours for the fourth and final day of each KDFW pool. Wagering on those Sundays will begin at noon (all times Eastern) and end at 5:30 p.m., one hour later than in the previous three years of the wager. The hours on the first three days of each pool were not changed. Wagering on those days will open at noon. The 128th renewal of the Kentucky Derby is scheduled for Saturday, May 4. "The Kentucky Derby Future Wager has been a significant success story for Churchill Downs over the past three years," said Alex Waldrop, president of Churchill Downs. "It has rapidly become a part of Derby tradition and it generates early fan excitement and anticipation in the weeks leading up to America's greatest race." The Future Wager allows racing fans to place wagers on contenders for the Kentucky Derby weeks in advance of the race at odds that may be more attractive than those they would receive on Derby Day. The Kentucky Derby Future Wager is a $2 minimum wager and is a win bet only. The field of horses in each pool consists of 24 betting interests, which include 23 horses and a 24th interest that is a mutuel field that contains all other three-year-old Thoroughbreds - regardless of whether those horses have been nominated to the Kentucky Derby and the Visa Triple Crown. Major Kentucky Derby preps scheduled during the three KDFW pools include the Fountain of Youth (GI) and Risen Star (GIII) in Pool 1; the Florida Derby (GI) in Pool 2; and the Santa Anita Derby (GI) in Pool 3. For the second consecutive year, the final KDFW pool will be held a week before the weekend of major preps that includes the Toyota Blue Grass (GI), the Wood Memorial (GI), and the Arkansas Derby (GII). Churchill Downs, the world's most legendary racetrack, has conducted Thoroughbred racing and presented America's greatest race, the Kentucky Derby, continuously since 1875. Located in Louisville, the flagship racetrack of Churchill Downs Incorporated (Nasdaq: CHDN) also operates Trackside Louisville, an off-track betting facility. Churchill Downs will conduct the 128th running of the Kentucky Derby on May 4, 2002. The track has served as host to the Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championships a record five times. The 2002 Spring Meet at Churchill Downs is scheduled for April 27 through July 7. Information about Churchill Downs can be found on the Internet at www.churchilldowns.com.
