COSHOCTON, Ohio (AP) -- A member of the national champion women's swimming team at Kenyon College was killed and 10 others were injured when a van crashed on a slick road.

Killed Thursday in the crash was Molly Hatcher, 21, of Evanston, Ill., dispatcher James Stewart of the State Highway Patrol in Zanesville said. She was a member of the team that has won 16 straight NCAA Division III national championships.

Sheriff's Lt. Jon Mosier said 10 other people in the van were injured in the single-vehicle crash, which occurred about five miles east of Coshocton on westbound U.S. 36.

Most of the injuries were not believed to be life threatening, authorities said.

The cause of the crash was not known, but slick roads might be to blame, Mosier said.

Sgt. Kay Perkins with the State Highway Patrol in Cambridge told The Coshocton Tribune that evidence indicated the van skidded sideways onto the guardrail and rolled twice while on the rail. Few of the passengers were wearing seat belts, she said.

Kenyon College is in Gambier, about 30 miles west of the crash scene.

The team reportedly was returning from a swimming meet in North Carolina when the crash occurred around 6:30 p.m., about 65 miles east of Columbus.

Jennifer Farmer, mayor of Gambier, said the school and village share close ties, and the fatal accident was a blow to the whole community.

"We're integrally connected, and everybody will be affected by this loss," she told The Times Recorder of Zanesville.

"Our hearts go out to the members of the swim team and all their family and friends," she said.

Tom Stamp, director of public Affairs for Kenyon College, told the Coshocton newspaper that several students on campus had already learned about the accident.

"It's the kind of college where if you don't know the name, you know the face," Stamp said.

Kenyon has about 1,575 students. The school is on winter break. Classes are scheduled to resume on Monday.
